How-To: Set up Alerts on CabinPulse

CabinPulse is an always-on, always-connected remote monitoring unit for cabins and remote properties. When something goes wrong - CabinPulse will let you know! In this article, we'll explore the two different types of CabinPulse alerts and walk through how to set up alerts for your cabin.

Getting Started

To get started, log on to the CabinPulse Dashboard.

On the top right corner, you'll see a button that says "Alerts" - select it to open the Alerts view. This is where you can create, delete or disable alerts.

You'll notice that there are two types of alerts: Instant Alerts and Standard Alerts.

Instant Alerts

Instant Alerts are - as the name suggests - instant. If the power goes out, it will only take a few seconds to receive a text and email. Similarly if the temperature drops below your set threshold, it's a matter of seconds before you'll get the alert.

These alerts are stored on your CabinPulse device, and it's your device itself that triggers the alert - meaning almost no delay. You can create an instant alert for one high and one low condition for each metric.

Instant Alerts are best for critical alerts - such as power outages or rapid humidity changes.

Standard Alerts

Standard Alerts use the data stored on your dashboard when deciding to send an alert. In normal operation, CabinPulse sends updated data to your dashboard every 15 minutes. This means that there can be a small delay (up to 15 minutes) from when the alert condition is met. For example: if the power goes out at 4:11pm, you would receive an alert at 4:15pm.

Because Standard Alerts are based on dashboard data, you can create as many different alerts as you'd like.

Standard Alerts are best for less urgent alerts - such as air quality or atmospheric pressure.

Create Alert

Let's create an alert that will notify us if the temperature drops below 10 °C - a sign that the furnace has likely quit!

Click "Create Alert", and choose which metric you want to monitor. For this example, we'll select temperature.

A drop in temperature below 10 °C is pretty urgent - assuming you set your thermostat at about 15 °C when you leave the cabin in the winter, it suggests that a heating failure is imminent.

There's no time to delay for getting an alert like this, so we'll choose Instant as the alert type.

We want to know if the temperature drops below a certain value, so we'll hit Below.

Next we'll move the slider to 10 °C.

Finally, we'll choose "Alert immediately instead".

The condition duration is different than Instant vs Standard Alerts. The duration specifies how long a condition must persist before sending the alert. If it's an instant alert with a 5 minute duration, it will send an alert immediately when the condition is met for 5 minutes.

Just click "Create Alert", wait a few moments as the alert is sent to your CabinPulse device, and voila!

Now, you'll instantly get an alert as soon as the temperature drops below 10 °C

What's Alarm Detection?

You might have noticed the "Alarm Detection" toggle at the bottom of each screen. It's entirely unrelated to your custom alerts; instead it allows you to turn on and off Smoke Alarm detection monitoring.

Clicking the "i" button will bring up a bit more information about this feature. If there's a single, modern smoke detector going off in an otherwise quiet environment (like most empty cabins would be!), you'll get an urgent alert immediately. You can disable this feature by toggling the switch, in case you find you're getting false alarms.

CabinPulse uses a built-in acoustic sensor to match up the frequency, intensity and pattern of smoke detectors. It's all processed on-device in real-time, and no acoustic data is ever stored or transmitted.

Where Are Alerts Sent?

Alerts are sent to all phone numbers and all email addresses on file for the account. You can learn about adding additional phone numbers and email addresses to get alerts by reading this article.

You're All Set!

CabinPulse will now send you an alert if the temperatures drop - all without WiFi! It's a similar process for other metrics. You'll get alerts both when a condition is met, and when it's resolved.
